About: fairfield, connecticut

For over 300 years, Fairfield's major source prosperity was agriculture. In the 1700s, corn, rye, wheat, potatoes, and flax were the main crops grown for export and consumption. Flax seed, used to make linseed oil, was shipped to Ireland where it was used to make fine linen cloth. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, shipbuilding was a profitable business for residents, as Fairfield's coast provided good harbors. As time progressed, agriculture declined as westward expansion made land back east valued for developmental potential rather than farmland.
