Budding social justice advocates on Tuesday sought to sway lawmakers laboring under tight budgets toward legislative proposals that would ease the financial burden on social workers and make life easier for the vulnerable populations they serve. After rallying at Faneuil Hall, social workers and social work students filed into the State House touting bills that would eliminate mandatory minimum sentences for drug offenders, offer social workers student loan forgiveness, and lift the cap on cash welfare benefits for children conceived while the mother is on welfare.

Chelsea cops arrest man on charges of impersonating officer, robbery

An 18-year-old who used a stolen police badge and police radio to rob a Chelsea man last weekend is under arrest, police said. Jorge Beltran of Chelsea is expected to be arraigned in Chelsea District Court on charges of impersonating a police officer, kidnapping and robbery.

Massachusetts mosques to hold 'Open Mosque Day'

Sixteen mosques across Massachusetts will hold an Open Mosque Day to give the public a chance to meet Muslim neighbors. On April 2, attendees will be able to tour a mosque, hear a brief introduction to Islam and witness a Muslim prayer service.

James Comey avoids questions during stop in Chelsea

FBI Director James Comey met with area law enforcement officials Tuesday, promising to strengthen partnerships between federal, state, and local authorities. Comey met with about 40 law enforcement heads from Everett to New Hampshire over lunch before taking part in a ribbon-cutting to announce the opening of a new headquarters in Chelsea for the FBI's Boston field office, which covers Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.

Tedeschi Opens 189th Store

Tedeschi Food Shops Inc. has opened its 189th location, in the town of Everett, Mass. It is the company's fourth store in Everett and officially opened its doors to customers on December 9. The Baker-Polito Administration recently announced the release of $5.7 million in competitive grants to cities and towns across Massachusetts who, with their local community partners, will use the funding to combat gang violence and support local at-risk youth. Wanted man arrested in Everett after pursuit

A Somerville man wanted on an assault and battery warrant was arrested early Tuesday morning after leading State Police in a pursuit from Charlestown to Everett, where he crashed into several parked cars, officials said. Thirty-one-year-old, William Seaburg took off from a Charlestown traffic stop shortly after 1 a.m., State Police said in a statement.
