The city of Elgin is located forty miles northwest of Chicago along the Fox River. In 1835 Hezekiah and brother James T. Gifford established the city and named it after the old Scottish hymn titled "The Song of Elgin." Elgin was known for their dairy industry, which sold butter and other dairy products to nearby Chicago.
