The city of Elgin is located forty miles northwest of Chicago along the Fox River. In 1835 Hezekiah and brother James T. Gifford established the city and named it after the old Scottish hymn titled "The Song of Elgin." Elgin was known for their dairy industry, which sold butter and other dairy products to nearby Chicago. When the Elgin Watch Company was founded, the dairy industry waned, and the new watch factory became the largest producer of fine watches in the nation.

East Dundee man who fell from roof has life-threatening injuries

A man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries Tuesday after falling from the roof of an East Dundee home, officials say. The man was about 70 years old and fell at 2 p.m. while working on the roof of a home in the 400 block of Hill Street, East Dundee Fire Deputy Chief Jason Parthun said.

Police: Elgin man trashed apartment, choked woman

A 22-year-old Elgin man is charged with trashing a woman's apartment at Elgin's Artspace Lofts , destroying artwork and later choking her when confronted at a bar. Darian K. Greco, of the 1300 block of Wing Street, has been charged with felony burglary and aggravated domestic battery, along with two counts of misdemeanor domestic battery, according to Kane County court records.

U-46 to teach students about distracted driving, dealing with police

Elgin-area high school students will be able to start driving earlier, and learn how to deal with distracted driving and what to do if they get pulled over by police. Elgin Area School District U-46 is looking to update its driver education curriculum for its five high schools to align with changes in state law and mandates, and incorporate more online resources for teachers and students to access, officials said.

More than 400 school superintendents from across Illinois -- representing more than 1 million students -- are posting messages outside their schools and on Twitter starting Monday to call on the governor and state lawmakers to pass a state budget.  After 22 months without a budget in Illinois, state superintendents said schools can't handle another year without one.  "If there is no budget in place at the state level, I think districts across the state will struggle opening at all," said Tony Sanders, CEO of School District U-46, the state's second largest district based in northwest suburban Elgin.  "The state currently owes our district $25 million, and that's for programs such as special education, transportation and bilingual education," Sanders said.
