Castro Valley is located in central California. The city was named in honor of Don Guillermo Castro, a rancher and a soldier in the Mexican army. Castro was given a land grant that consisted of 28,000 acres. Because he had a gambling habit, he ended up having to sell off portions of the land in order to pay off some of his gambling debts. During the 1940s and 1950s Castro Valley was known for its chicken ranches. Today it exists as a residential community comprised of individuals who commute to the larger surrounding cities.

Alameda: Spelling bee brings out community spirit

Flooding at Redwood Canyon Golf Course

Castro Valley's Redwood Canyon Golf Course resembled a lake on Friday after two inches of rain fell this week and water was released to relieve pressure on two nearby reservoirs. The golf course sits between two reservoirs the Upper San Leandro and Lake Chabot reservoirs both of which are at capacity, according to the East Bay Municipal Utility District.

BART to pay more than $1M in hazardous materials suit

BART has been ordered to pay $1.275 million in a settlement with three district attorney's offices in the region for failing to implement hazardous materials business plans at facilities throughout the transit system, prosecutors said today. Alameda County Superior Court Judge Morris Jacobson ordered the settlement as part of a civil environmental prosecution involving the district attorney's offices in Contra Costa, Alameda and San Mateo counties.

Hayward schools' performing arts center heads to drawing board

It may be several years before musical and theater performances are held at a new, multimillion-dollar performing arts center, but Hayward school district administrators and residents may get a better idea of what it will look like within a year as designs are drawn up for the facility. Tree Topples Onto Vehicle in Castro Valley

A tree fell on top of a vehicle on Crow Canyon Road in Castro Valley on Wednesday night, bringing power lines down with it and blocking traffic in both directions, according to the California Highway Patrol. The female driver reportedly was still inside Toyota SUV when the tree came down on it, but she was able to open the door and was not trapped, the CHP said.
