Police: Man struck in the head, murdered in Brockton

BROCKTON - A Brockton man was murdered during an argument early Tuesday morning inside a multi-family home on Menlo Street, according to police. The slaying happened at 18 Menlo St. around 12:46 a.m., when a man struck another man in the head with an object, police said.

Cops: Victim tried to catch a.m. train

A 75-year-old man who was struck and killed by a commuter rail locomotive early yesterday morning appeared to have been trying to catch the train before he was hit, police say. The man, identified last night as John Hamilton, was struck about 7:15 a.m. by a commuter train that was departing the MBTA's Brockton station, according to transit police.

Marijuana-cultivation facility gets green light in Fitchburg

The Fitchburg Planning Board unanimously approved a special permit for the facility on 20 Authority Drive on Tuesday night following a largely positive public hearing. "It looks like a very low-impact facility that should not impact the quality of life or property values at Saw Mill Pond ," said Dan Tocci, who lives in the nearby 60-unit complex said.

Vandals desecrate statues at Brockton church

In what was the second incident of vandalism in just over a year, a vandal or vandals struck overnight at Saint Edith Stein Parish, damaging four statues on the East Main Street property. The namesake of the church was splattered with white paint, while three other statues on the property were painted black.  Four of the statues on the property were spray painted between Monday evening and Tuesday morning, when Karen Denahy, an administrative assistant at the church, wasn't on the property.

A Stoughton woman was found guilty of using spas she owned in Brockton and Norwood as fronts for prostitution, the Massachusetts attorney general's office announced Tuesday.
