Named after its Presbyterian parish Bloomfield was incorporated as a township in 1812. The area was originally settled in 1666 as part of Newark, it was made up of mostly English and Dutch settlers. Animal control officer gets $3,500 fine in baby deer killing

BLOOMFIELD -- An animal control officer accused of slitting a baby deer's throat two years ago has pleaded guilty to disorderly persons charges related to the animal's death, the New Jersey SPCA announced Friday. According to the animal advocacy group, Vincent Ascolese, 50, also had to pay $3,500 to the NJSPCA as restitution for the 2015 incident.

Police Chief Mark Minichini said the incident happened at about 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Joralemon St. and S. Franklin Ave. The pedestrian, an 83-year-old Nutley resident, was crossing Joralemon, from west to east, while a township Department of Public Works vehicle was turning left, from Franklin to Joralemon. The driver later told police that "he thought he was clear of the intersection," Minichini said, but "contact [with the woman] was made," causing her to fall to the pavement.
