Suspicious car at Athens condo leads to cocaine seizure

An Athens-Clarke police officer found a man with cocaine shortly before midnight Tuesday after responding to a report of a suspicious car parked inside the Whistleberry Condo complex on North Avenue. The officer encountered Morris Benjamin Bullock, 44, of Spratlin Mill Road, Hull, inside a BMW and Bullock explained he pulled over to read e-mails, according to the report.

Athens man assaults mother with pork chop, head-butts her, police say

An Athens man this week was arrested for an assault on his mother in which he reportedly threw a pork chop at her and then head-butted the woman, according to an Athens-Clarke County police report. Terry Bernard Ball Jr., 29 was eating the pork chop at his home on Simmons Street at about 7:30 p.m. Monday when he became angry at his mother because she hadn't gotten cigarettes for him, the 60-year-old woman told police.

Historian James Cobb of Athens will be among four inductees into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame this year, along with two poets and the late Eugenia Price, who wrote historical novels based on Georgia coastal islands history. Cobb, Price and poets Alfred Corn and Kevin Young will be inducted into the Hall of Fame during a November ceremony, according to an announcement from the University of Georgia Libraries, which established the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame in 2000.
