Athens firefighters battle - strange' large brush fire in snow

One of the more significant incidents Athens firefighters had to contend with amid the the snow and sub-freezing temperatures Wednesday morning was a large brush fire in northern Athens. The fire on Walker Drive off Danielsville Road was "strange" considering the weather conditions, said Mark Melvin, assistant chief of the Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services Department.

Creature Comforts kicks off annual philanthropy campaign

The Creature Comforts Brewing Co.' s fourth annual Get Comfortable fundraiser kicked off last week and will last until Nov. 7. Six local charities will benefit from the funds raised during the campaign.

Dalton man allegedly steals food off plates at Athens eatery

A 19-year-old Dalton man was arrested early Friday in Athens after he walked into a restaurant downtown and took food off of people's plates and left with a cap he took from a table, Athens-Clarke County police said. A police officer was working a side job at Zaxby's on East Clayton Street when the teen entered, apparently intoxicated because he stumbled and "had an 'I am lost' look about him," according to police.

New art exhibit to open at Classic Center galleries

A new art exhibit opens 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Classic Gallery I and II at The Classic Center in downtown Athens. Seven artists will be featured in this new installation titled "Kaleidoscope," including Stanley Bermudez, Tammy Cantarella, Beth Thompson, Starr Campbell, Katherine Burke, Wilma and Erin McIntosh.

Clarke school board elects Bybee as its new president

Charles Worthy, who had been president since 2006, handed the gavel over to Bybee in a Thursday board meeting after board members voted 6-3 to replace Worthy as the board's presiding officer. The board voted 6-3 for Bybee over Worthy, and chose Linda Davis as vice president.

Athens man, Elbert woman charged with killing woman's grandfather, sinking body in pond

An Athens man and an Elberton woman were both charged Wednesday with murdering the woman's grandfather then sinking his body in a farm pond, according to the Elbert County Sheriff's Office. William David Peterson, 19, of Athens and Savanna Marie Jennings, 19, of Elberton are both charged with murder, felony murder, malice murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, aggravated assault and concealing a death.
