Authorities arrest Athens man, seize drugs and cash from Newton Bridge Road home

Authorities last week made one arrest and seized a large quantity of drugs and cash when conducting a search at a home in the 1700 block of Newton Bridge Road, according to an Athens-Clarke County police report obtained Tuesday by the Athens-Banner Herald and OnlineAthens.com. Members of the Northeast Georgia Regional Drug Force and Athens-Clarke County police Crime Suppression unit at about 8 a.m. on Feb. 21 executed a search warrant at the residence and seized several grams of crystal methamphetamine, multiple pills of hydrocodone, clonazepam and methadone, according to the report.

The dozens of people participating in the latest phase of the Envision Athens long-range planning effort found themselves in a set of wide-ranging conversations Tuesday, considering everything from the difficulty of getting from one place to another in Athens to problems for entrepreneurs looking at Athens as a possible locale for their start-up businesses. Athens man at home with woman he was ordered to have no contact with

Ralph Leon White, 43, was arrested Tuesday morning at the home he shares with his girlfriend despite a judges' order he have no contact with the woman because of a domestic violence incident there earlier in the month, Athens-Clarke County police said. Responding to an unknown problem due to a 12:07 a.m. 911 call in which a dispatcher could hear a man and woman arguing, police arrived at the East Carver Drive residence and could hear White threaten to smack the woman in the mouth, according to police.

Athens man sleeping in truck sought on outstanding warrant

Doyle Calvin Williams, 31, of Rocky Drive was arrested Monday night at an Oconee Street apartment complex and it was learned he had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in court, Athens-Clarke County police said Williams brought attention to himself by sleeping in an improperly parked truck at the Flats at Carrs Hill, and police said they discovered the warrant when running an identity check on the man.

No parole for Athens man in brutal sledgehammer attack

An Athens man this month was sentenced to 14 years in prison without the possibility of parole for a brutal attack in which he busted open another man's head with a sledgehammer. After the August 2015 attack on a construction coworker, 36-year-old Byron Terrell Arnold was charged with criminal attempt to commit murder by Athens-Clarke County police who heard witnesses described Arnold as swinging the sledgehammer at the victim's head "as if he were chopping wood."

Athens man attacked downtown because he was gay, according to police

A 24-year-old Hall County man was arrested early Saturday after he reportedly attacked an Athens resident because the victim was gay, according to an Athens-Clarke County police report obtained Monday by the Athens Banner-Herald and OnlineAthens.com. The 20-year-old Highland Park Drive resident was walking past the Georgia Bar on West Clayton Street at about 2:45 a.m., when Chad Andrew Weaver, 24, of Gainesville yelled at the victim that he was a "faggot" because the victim was dressed in women's clothing, according to police.
