Drug task force arrests man at Athens complex

The Northeast Georgia regional Drug Task Force on Wednesday executed a search warrant at a home at Oak Hill Apartments where they made one arrest and seized an undisclosed amount of marijuana, prescription pills and a stolen gun, Athens-Clarke County police said. Freddie Lamar Johnson, 33, of Nellie B Avenue was taken into custody on several outstanding warrants, two of which had been issued locally for failure to appear in court on a burglary charge and a probation violation from a possession of marijuana conviction, according to the Clarke County Jail's website.

Athens library gets $100,000 grant to install solar array

The Athens Clarke County Library has won a $100,000 grant to install a solar array at the library's 2025 Baxter Street building. The grant was one of two $100,000 awards this year by EBSCO Information Services, a large library resources provider for academic, public library, government and school customers.

QuikTrip plan gets OK from airport officials

Athens-Ben Epps Airport Authority members have approved aspects of the plans for a QuikTrip convenience store and gas station related to its presence within an airport overlay zone at its proposed Oconee Street site. QuikTrip is seeking a rezoning of 2.58 acres on Oconee Street at Elbert Street near the Athens Perimeter interchange with Oconee Street.

Athens gang members indicted for Facebook Live assault

A Clarke County grand jury recently indicted three Athens street gang members for an alleged brutal attack on a teen broadcast live on social media. The alleged Bloods gang members beat and stomped the 18-year-old victim the night of May 10 at Timber Chase apartments on Sycamore Drive, and they aired the assault as it happened on Facebook Live, according to Athens-Clarke County police.
